He made his international debut at Under-19 level in February 2006 during the La Manga tournament and came on as substitute for the final moments of the Irish Under-21 win away to Azerbaijan. He saved a penalty against Azerbaijan in his first start at this level in May 2006.

Currently playing for Watford in the Championship, Rene is widely tipped for a long and succesful career at the top level.
